I stumbled across this company today, and apparently this isn't a joke. If this is real, why is there not a tsunami of investment dollars towards this technology?

Probably because it costs a ton of money to get a plant running. here is a good link to a news station that did a report on one of the plants: Link2

It will take a while, but it will probably take off (assuming the global economy doesn't collapse into chaos).

Lots of garbage burning plants which run energy generators and/or hot water for heating over here already ... but that puts a lot of toxins in the air and prevents future recycling, so this is a big step forward. Not really a revolutionary game changer though.

The exhaust gases from the one I worked in four or five times a year, on shutdowns (the first of it's type in Europe, about ten years old now) were cleaner than the surrounding atmosphere. It produced 12 MW, of which three were consumed by the plant itself. I can give more details regarding pyrolyzation and exhaust scrubbers if required.

I'd for sure appreciate it!

Well, the short answer is that if stuff (garbage, etc) is burned above 1200 or 1300 degrees C it is completely pyrolyzed, ie will no longer burn or react with anything, etc. (it might react with strong acids, etc. but it is basically harmless)

The garbage etc is burned with gas and forced air to achieve complete pyrolyzation. The exhaust gas is then filtered to remove any remaining ash. the ash is sold to make breeze blocks, road surfaces etc.

The exhaust gas still contains CO2, which is removed by 'scrubbing', using calcium hydroxide (limewater), which is sprayed in.

The resulting gas is 'cleaner' than the surrounding air, basically just Nitrogen, and small amounts of Argon. (probably some oxygen as well)

I can expand on this if required. I worked on all aspects of the plant while it was operational. I understand it's now been shut down, as it was too expensive to maintain, but it was an experimental plant in the first place. later generations have benefitted from lessons learned.

If anyone wants to build one and wants to avoid the mistakes learned from the prototype, I'm available for a suitable consultancy fee wink

EDIT: Apparently it has re-opened again:
