Will an IRFP460 work with Uzzor's boost converter? I am asking because Futurlec sent me the IRFP460 instead of the IRFP450 that I ordered. The boost converter that I built isn't working, and I'm just wondering if that could be the cause.

They are extremely similar: they have the same breakdown voltage, the IRF460 has a smaller on-resistance and higher gate capacitance but it's not a big difference. Substituting one for the other isn't going to make your converter not work.

do you use a NE555 (bipolar) or TS555/LCM555 (CMOS)? The latter have a significantly less current capability. 68R doesn't feel like a good idea for 2,9nF when I'm concerned. I'd go for a MCP14E4 + 2R2 in series (worked quite well for me in an application with an FQA8N100 driving a flyback choke).

It may behoove you to start with the 555 LED blinker circuit. You can learn what role the 555 does and it gives you visual notice of whether it is working or not. Take the 10nF capacitor out and put your capacitor bank in its place (this assumes your capacitor bank exceeds around 20uF, which most do). Now take out the inductor and put in its place the series LED and 1K resistor.
Quadruple check your wiring. Use an ohmmeter to confirm that the pins that should be connected are in fact connected.
Then power on. If the LED blinks, that's a good sign. My guess is that it won't. But whether the LED is on or not will help in the diagnosis. If you have a large capacitor bank, it may blink too slowly. In this case you can try a smaller capacitance.
This assumes you've used a solderless breadboard... I hope you did!

I don't think that will work because my capacitor bank is 320v, 4800 uf. And I used soldered stripboard. I have already taken the circuit apart and plan to remake it, hopefully that will fix the problem.

It would work, it would just take a couple minutes to blink. But if you cannot easily swap and replace components then it is more work than it's worth.

Thanks for all of the help, I got the circuit working! The problem was, of all things, the battery holder wasn't connected to the batteries in one place... Oh well.
