I think there's a way to recharge a dead lead acid. You have to pry open the top part though I think and then you add water to it. I THINK. Don't hold me to it.

Lead waste is hazardous, so you should only dispose of it at an approved recycling facility.

you might be able to get some acid out of it. wear full protective gear and drill a small hole in the top. i believe these types of batteries can build up pressure on the inside which might cause acid to shoot out when punctured. then drain the acid out into a glass container.
probably not worth all the hassle. i'd just have it recycled.

I've been trying to resist the temptation of suggesting that it might make a good anchor for a small boat. As it's sealed, the lead and acid shouldn't poison the fishes, etc. smile

Seriously, though, you might be able to cut it open and use it to put a transformer, etc. under oil, but I'm not sure how you'd seal it. It does have ready made feedthroughs, though.

I've managed to harvest lead from those batteries.

*Smash it up with an axe
*Take the plate bits and paste+mats, soak it all in hot water with some baking soda
*Poke all the paste out of the plates
*Melt down the plate skeletons, you should end up with about 3lbs of lead from that battery.

I'd only recommend it though if you are either really bored or too poor to buy $3 worth of lead.

isn't it lead oxide in those cells? makes a decent electrode for electrolysis i've heard. i still doubt it's worth the mess and danger. it may no longer hold electrical energy but you could use it store gravitational energy if you put it high on a shelf.
