It may well refer to the neuro-surgical experiments of Kevin Warwick, Professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, who linked his nervous system to that of his wife, Irene.

Interesting experiment, wonder if the recent hippocampus replacement implant will lead to a device that can essentially replace lost brain regions?

This raises the possibility of human beings who are essentially cyborgs, in that the artificial components become essential for normal brain functioning.

I couldn't find anything that had sources or experiments in it. Personally, I heard of it by word of mouth
