hi 4hv,
i have a question for all the ferrite transformer winders here Ive been talking to a somewhat expert in the field of high frequency and high voltage including ferrite transformers
i have been informed that ferrite transformers can do into a avalanche effect causing meltdown or even the explosion of the transformer have any of you ever seen this happen
also people who have failed in winding their transformers and other things they have done it would be a brilliant help to everyone if everyone reports there fails and how they have sorted it out remember people learn from failures

Tom,
Permeability in a ferrite core drops above a certain temperature, so if the core gets any hotter, then inductance drops too, current goes up and soon the whole caboodle has gone puff. But remember, it is from your _own_ mistakes you learn, so you have to study, experiment, fail -and try to learn from it!

The only problem I've run into is secondary flashover; I've found that big plates on the ungrounded end of the secondary help greatly to solve this problem. Alternatively, use tall cores and leave plenty of space on the ungrounded end, or throw the whole thing in oil (or vacuum pot in wax/epoxy). Inverter going poof and letting out magic smoke is, from my experience, the bigger worry, as it is much harder to troubleshoot than transformer going poof. Also, don't try to wind transformers for absurd voltages.

a misplaced gap can also prove nasty
I had a ferrite go mad at throwing little racing sparks between the two facets of a gap that formed on one leg of an E core, particularly hot sparks and the totality of the ~1cm² area was arcing
not to mention if the windings were potted with wax... ^^
