This is what i use. It is a simple iron, but it differs from radio shack soldering irons and some others i have tried in that it just won't die! It has been through hell, and it looks like hell, but it works fine. I even use lighters to heat it up faster when i don't feel like waiting. I know it is abusive, but i got it for 16 dollars so sue me Then, get (or make) a 7 dollar light dimmer, and voila!
I have just never liked the soldering irons with the variable heat, mostly because the ones i have used had large tips or were just too large. Mine is small and has a neon indicator light which has saved me from many a debacle.

oh wait... a light dimmer would work wouldn't it :D I didn't think of that, I've got a good iron right now quality wise, with two heat settings (high and low) but it is either too hot or not hot enough haha, if I just wire in a light dimmer than it should still work?

Same here, 30 watts will fry anything if I'm not quick, 15 will never get anywhere. At least I can solder fast now (~.5s for a joint)
