Thanks for the links, I am after a large ferrite core so i can take a stab at a homemade transformer, i dont have any specs, this more of a trial and error experiment. I was thinking something like this size Link2 anyone have any other links for a high voltage ferrite core?

Thanks again

Side note, since this is the high voltage forum, i got a small FBT to start an arc 2 1/2 inches away shortly before it died.

the specs im after are:

im going to have 7.2Kw in (230v @ 30A)

4 secondaries for series and paralleling depending on what power i want

with 100% efficancy i should get about

18mA per secondary at 10Kv

im probibly wrong somewhere though

im not sure if anything of this is possible im just stepping into the shore of transformer design and building

I'd suggest possibly using four cores if you want four secondaries. (I'm planning on using two cores). I'm aiming for 50kV, but I'm aware of the problems involved. Primaries will probably be in parallel (maybe series, using a higher voltage, not sure yet).

Using four cores, four primaries and four secondaries would allow you to connect the secondaries in series or parallel, but I agree with the post that says this is not usually successful. (I think it was Bwang)

hmm im frankly just not sure about any of this transformer design stuff is there any good resources that can show me how do design ferrite HV transformers, work out the core volume and other things i need to know?

ive been googleing during lunch brakes and havent found much that will fully explain how to make transformers with ferrite

Reading through the TI magnetics design app notes should help you out quite a bit:

Anything to do with power electronics and manufacturer app notes are usually your best free source of information.

I'd second what Mattski said. The link I posted above has a section on design.

Also, the spec sheet I posted above gives you an idea of what power you can expect and at what frequency for a given CSA, for a core similar to N27, ie one that is most efficient at around 25kHz, but will go up to 100kHz.

I worked it out by choosing the frequency (25kHz) then checking the spec. sheet for power rating in push-pull (H-bridge, etc), which gives a figure of 2.445kW per core.

Knowing this is best I can achieve with good efficiency is a good place to start. Two cores will give me around 5kW, so I just need to pump 2.5kW through each core at 25kHz and see what happens. No 'real' maths involved.

For hobbyist purposes, just buy a few sets of these: Link2
Big ferrite is cheap, and you can never go wrong with too much core volume.

these two videos inspired me into the homemade transformer idea

ive dicided if i can get this whole transformer idea going then im gonna put it under oil and run some 300kv xray cable out of it for safety :D

if you read one of the descriptions of his vids the bricks are only for rectification
