In discussing the construction of a Wimhurst Machine with some people on another forum I was reminded that the foil layer of standard CDs is actually conductive. That got me wondering... Has anyone ever tried to make a Tesla Coil capacitor out of a stack of CDs? If so, how well did it work if at all?

It's a great idea, but the problem is that the foil comes far too close to the edge of the disk and flashover would happen as soon as you apply voltage.

Actually not such a bizarre idea. It might work for a very low capacitance, very high voltage capacitor. If you used a stack of CD's with a voltage between them of a few kV, each CD will provide a nice voltage division to reduce corona effects. Think MMC with corona rings like in a huge Marx generator. The end CD's would be metal discs of CD shape to allow a metal contact. The capacitance would be very low per section but with low inductance and a very high voltage. Still probably easier to use a string of smaller caps to get 100kV plus though.
