If you can get some scope shots of the output / switching that would be cool. I would be interested to see how that 555 is driving it all.
Class D amps are my person favorite of all the amplifiers.

And I can't get this damn high-lo side gate drive ic to work! FREAKIN ELECTRONICS YOU SUCK.

Another high side drive option is to use and optoisolator and a regular lowside IC with an isolated supply. (isolated from the lowside at least)
I personally love these 
They have the driver and optoelectronics all in one pack, very easy to interface to 5v logic.
