I read that it is possible to build a DRSSTC by adding a capacitor to the Steve MiniSSTC.So I add a capacitor to my MiniSSTC I build several weeks ago.(detail here Link2 "portable tesla coil")and did some quick and dirty experiment.

When I test it at 60V DC,I get 10cm sparks(without capacitor I get 3~4cm).But when I increase on time the sparks become shorter, and when I test it with full wave rectified 110VAC,it worked for a few seconds and IGBT are killed.(I use 20N60A4)

How can I fix the problem? Should I modify the interrupter to decrease on time?
Thanks

Adding a tank cap to a standard SSTC will inevitably cause IGBT failures, since a SSTC controller has neither OCD nor circuitry to switch at the zero current crossing.

My DRSSTC was a SSTC once. I only tuned the primary and it works (since my interrupter was already for DRSSTC).

The thing is to have a Good Surge Impedance on primary circuit, that limits the the primary peak current. In my case, both 60V and 320V I got about 250Apk in primary. It doesnt change even with ground strikes.

In the first time, it was even with IRFP250N Mosfets Running at 150VDC (110Apk primary).

Here is the topic of my DRSSTC:

And a video of how is running now:

It doesnt have OCD not even Syncronizer. And runs very fine. The IGBT temperature after running for about 15 minuts didnt get more than 34ºC
