hey everyone. i cant seem to find a simple 555 based audio flyback driver circuit. actualy i found one, and then took it apart then tried to rebuild it many times and never got it to work. schematic . does anyone know how i can make a 555 base flyback driver like this? using guess schematics i can get a high pitch whine with music mixed in, but not just the music. can anyone help? regards, -ben

You need to use higher frequency. Lower the 10 nF cap to something like 1 nf or 5 nf. That way it'll be below hearing frequency, and all you'll hear is music.

hey so lucky for you, I have a schem that works and the voltage spikes are taken care of so they won't ruin your ipod! You can use a different fet then the one listed and all .01 and .1uf caps are film. Also I found that the voltage to the primary of the flyback is best between 12 and 20vdc. If the arc is low try flipping the pins.

i am not sure, but i don't think that worked for me. i lowered the frequency and got louder sound and as i moved to higher frequency's the audio disappeared with the rest of the sound. don't ask me why... keep in mind because i don't want to use my only remaining flyback until the circuit is finished, i put a speaker in place of the flyback primary. i think il try Camp Badgers design for now and hope it works. if it doesn't... keep those ideas rolling :D

OK people! start using Camp Badgers circuit if you want a flyback with audio mod. i just tested it and it works. i still dont know what happened however. i replaced the 3.3k and 2.2k resistors with a 50k pot and i could get a sound through the whine no matter how much i tuned it. but when i used two set resistors(2.2k and 1k) it worked just fine. just audio. no whine. can someone explain this?

The resistors set your duty cycle on the 555 timer as well as the frequency it emits, I think your problem was that the frequency was to low so it was audible with the plasma arc. When you lowered the values of the caps then it probably raised the frequency of the music as well as the timer.

that's sort of an issue there. A speaker has a lot more impedence than a flyback primary. Get a flyback, and use it with it and your sound issue should go away. Basically what you made was a simple class D amplifier with the speaker connected; Only problem is, your base frequency is wayyy too low for it to be effectively ran, plus you'd need a low pass filter for the speaker to work properly.

so your telling me that if it works with the speaker, it wont with the fly back? i am just using the speaker because i don't want to use the fb until i have a nice PCB for the circuit. i don't like doing hv projects with breadboards.
btw. why isn't hv in the dictionary... this is 4hv.org after all

It's not working for the speaker but will work for the flyback. Try it. The sound should be a LOT better. But, I will say, that plasma speakers in general aren't particularly loud. Expect to be able to hear it in a decently quiet room.
