Hi,

I'm currently building a small DRSSTC, and a month ago it was working almost perfectly, but I had a fuse failure due to a wire which was not insulated and touched the grounded driver box. The last working version was using Steve Wards DRSSTC-3's driver, but by now I moved to his New Universal Driver.

Both drivers are tested and working and the primary feedback is working too. The coil uses half-bridge topology (Fairchild G27N120BN IGBTs) with a 2*8400uF voltage doubler. For tests I use 12-24V input voltage (doubled of course). The OCD is set high enough so that it doesn't shut down the coil.

The main problem is that it only produces streamers if I put a grounded target close to its topload(which has a breakout point). In the past it produced sparks to air just as it should, but now I'm stuck here and I have no idea what the problem is.

I hope someone have a solution for this problem..... sad

Check grounding. Maybe it got loose or something.

I checked the grounding (3 diffrent) and everything is OK, in the past when the coil worked I've used the same ground.

So I think it's not related to the groundings, it must be something else... ill

Reverse the primary connections, it works for me sometimes.

I reversed the primary connections, but it didn't solved the problem. It's acting exactly the same as it was without the reversed primary connections. frown

Still searching for the answer......

It sounds like a tuning problem.

When it was working it was tuned just as now, I didn't changed anything in the two LC circuits, which can couse such a dramatic change in tuning, I only made changes in the driver circuit. And if I try to move the tap on the primary it will decrease the sparks which the coil produces to grounded targets.

The coil in the past when it was working: Link

And this video shows the problem itself: Link
If I put the grounded object closer the spark length increases until it hits the object and if I move the target far from the topload then the sparks decrease and vanish.

Maybe something changed, happened with my coil.

The Fres was 100kHz, now is 110kHz. So I changed the primary cap to correct it.

Seconded.
Did you move the coil into an area where there are objects closer to it than when you first tuned it and
had it running? My drsstc is picky about being moved from place to place, especially indoors. Outside
i have no issues. I once moved it from a small room into a larger one and had the same issue as you are.
No streamers unless i had a grounded target close enough to it. It would light a fluorescent bulb though. Try
laying a bulb near the base and see what it does!
