Does anyone know where PVC pipes thicker than 4.5" diameter (the thickest sold in Home Depot) can be purchased? Is there anything else that can be used instead?

I am currently building a small/medium-sized DRSSTC and I need a primary support that will block primary/secondary arcing.

A flat primary and strike ring work fine for preventing primary strikes; you don't need to wind the primary around a giant piece of PVC.

You can always check with a plumbing supply house. There are a few local to me but you would
need to find one in your area. I used to buy 12 inch pvc with a 1/2 inch wall to make speaker tubes
out of back in the day. They sold me drop off pieces but you may need to buy a whole piece. Just
get the phone book out wink

I think places here are just local places that only exist here. But we have a place called Godwin Plumbing, which is a master plumbing store around here. The largest they had was 6" diameter PVC pipe. Was like $35 for 3ft, not cheap if you ask me! But like said above, try local plumbing supply houses.

Might be worth looking around local building sites, etc. One of the workers may find you an offcut for the price of a drink!

If you're not careful, a plastic tube can make flashovers worse. Inserting a thick piece of plastic between primary and secondary actually intensifies the electric field in the remaining air gap. So try to use thinnish plastic and leave a substantial clearance to the secondary.

I've used:
Acrylic tube bought new (pretty expensive!)
Offcuts of HDPE water main (either bought or scavenged from building sites as suggested above)

Other ideas:
PVC air duct (used for lab fume hoods etc)
Plastic sewer or drain pipe (the really big sizes are more likely to be available at a builder's merchant or farm supplies store, etc)
Plastic trash can or laundry basket (try a mega furniture store like Ikea)

Would "sonotube" cardboard concrete forms work if you were to lacquer/urethane/resin coat them to prevent them from absorbing moisture from the air?

Probably, many people on the old TCML used Sonotubes as secondary formers and didn't report any problems.
