While scanning through some of the more interesting videos on wimp.com, I came across this one: It's interesting because of how the high voltage discharge appears to be turning the CD from translucent to transparent as the data apparently gets wiped off the disc. Is this a hoax?

I concur. This will blast the reflective foil backing from the disk, rendering it unreadable. Whether or not the dye gets damaged or not I don't know, but I guess it at least will be effective for anything but highly sensitive data. Not that it matters though, if you really need to erase a CD I can think of several methods that are both easier and more effective. Non as cool, fun and impressive though.
