Erasing a CD with high voltage (Video)

While scanning through some of the more interesting videos on wimp.com, I came across this one: Link2 It's interesting because of how the high voltage discharge appears to be turning the CD from translucent to transparent as the data apparently gets wiped off the disc. Is this a hoax?

No its not as hoax, i replicated it, and made a big mess. but it wont work on a dvd because the foil in inside and a separate label; on top

It doesn't really erase the data per se, it just rips the foil backing off the cd.
It's probably unreadable.

I concur. This will blast the reflective foil backing from the disk, rendering it unreadable. Whether or not the dye gets damaged or not I don't know, but I guess it at least will be effective for anything but highly sensitive data.
Not that it matters though, if you really need to erase a CD I can think of several methods that are both easier and more effective. Non as cool, fun and impressive though.
