Okay so i took apart an MOT to get at the primary to make some new test coils for my coilgun project. When i got the primary out i noticed something...it was light, like really light. I scrapped off the enamel coating and i found a silverish metal underneath. Did they start using aluminum for MOT primaries???
Yeah I kinda seen that coming, do you know if using this wire to make test coils would be a good idea? I really dont wanna dish out the money on wire just to "waste" it...

Aluminum wire would essentially double the resistance of your coil (well, Al is about 62% more resistive than Cu so not quite double.) I'm sure you can find another MOT before you are forced into buying the magnet wire. Be careful with the epoxy flakes on the MOT wire, worst slivers ever, use leather gloves.

I ended up using the wire from the first MOT I took apart to try and cast aluminum parts in my wood burning stove. Whenever I find a MOT with copper wire I keep it whole. Ones with aluminum I tear apart.
