I think brushless motors for electric RC car or RC aircraft might be a solution.
I have ever seen 40000RPM or even 60000RPM RC car motors.of course, lower RPM one is also available.the biggest of then can easily output more than 500W.

I once bought a model aircract magazine because it had an article on modifying hard drive motors by replacing the magnets, rewinding the coils, replacing bearings etc. There are probably sites online that specialize in this technology. The control circuits are basically H-bridges, but you can go the three phase route. you need some feedback for ramping up to speed then maintaining speed. I can provide some links to single phase and three phase drivers if anyone is interested.
