i woke up with a interesting idea this morning and cant stop thinking about it,
instead of 1 capacitor bank have 10, each capacitor bank will be at say 2.5Kv @ Xuf
they will be charged up then disscharged in sets e.g.

. C C C C C C C
. A A A A A A A A
. P P P P P P P P
. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

1s 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
2s 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
3s 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
4s 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 0
5s 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0
6s 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 0
7s 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0
8s 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0
9s 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0
10s 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0
11s 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 0
12s 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0
13s 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1
14s 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1
15s 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

and so on (it just loops around)

chargeing will be done by 10 zvs flyback homewound transformers
and switching by high powered IGBTs or vac tubes

the advantage i think would be continuous discharge forcing lots power into it
it could work rather well if my understanding of tesla coils is correct

any idea about this or is it a load of old tosh?

thanks,
Tom Williamson

well, you say a continuous discharge forcing lots of power... Do you think you can get more continuous power out than you put in?

no i think i ment that it will be more efficient and short bursts of higher power it basicly just lasts longer and more fluid discharge (nothing over unity)

it's interesting but I think less stages would be a better deal, easier to drive and maybe even have greater performance...

like using a CD4017 to discharge 4 banks in chain

If you want continuous power and you don't mind using some big IGBTs, why not just make a SSTC? Simpler, proven, and generally reliable.

I happen to agree with the above concept of working w/ a SSTC. It's a great tool to teach issues related to your topic.

Higher peak power tends to yield longer spark length. Making a continuous SGTC doesn't seem like a great idea. Ten IGBTs and charging circuits to get worse results (due to spark gap inefficiency) than a CW SSTC (with no capacitor bank) that uses two switches doesn't seem like a good use of time.
