Why is all the componnets of the majority of the designs ive seen have everything under the coils? Couldent I enclose the PS, gap an MMC ETC around the primary? Or it all about asthetics?

You don't want to put it above or around the the secondary because if the sparks are longer than the secondary, that is most likely where they will strike, with the possibility of damaging things.

so I could just enclose my components in a lexan case ontop of the primary round the secondary. being enclosed i wouldent worry bout sparks.
Sounds like you havent actually played with any TCs yet? The sparks can capacitively couple right through thick plastic. Remember, this is very high voltage RF. Capacitors act like a low impedance to AC, so the sparks will travel right through (although at reduced intensity). The best way to keep the sparks where you want them is field control. This is something that you sort of get a "feel" for. Basically, keep conductors rounded, and use toroids/spheres where you want to suppress the breakdown of air.

No not quite ive made a twin mot with the voltage doubler n' such, it wasent too impressive. i dont have a lot of experice in "capacitively couple right through thick plastic" types of cases so I wouldent of known.
