Musical Tesla Coil PRF Modulation

Hi guys, I'm building an audio modulated SSTC for my 4th year engineering project at uni and had a question regarding PRF modulation. I've read from steve4hv's site that by making the coil fire 440 times a second will produce the note A, how does the coil operate at resonant frequency if the FET's are only being triggered 440 times a second? Or am I understanding it completely wrong?

The FETs operate at the coil's resonant frequency that is too high to hear. You interrupt it on top of that at a frequency you can hear, so you get a frequency within a frequency, but you only hear the low one that you can control.

Look at Steve Ward's SSTC5, there are others but that is a very simple and straightforward circuit. The interruptor is an oscillator based on a 555 that toggles the enable pins on the mosfet gate driver ICs. The resulting output is bursts of resonant frequency square waves occurring at a much lower frequency. It's effectively very similar to switching power to the whole coil off and on rapidly.
