I have an old drill press but it only has one speed. I was wondering if I can replace the light switch with a light dimmer to make a it a drill press with a variable speed adjuster?

OMG that drill press is absolutely squee.
Get a small Variable Frequency Drive for it, and scrape off the paint on the machined part of the column, so you can slide the table up and down....Finish it with 120grit emery cloth.

Squee, indeed.

A regular lamp dimmer would probably explode. There is a device called a ceiling fan speed controller that might be more promising.

But the best (and most expensive) solution is replace the motor with a 3-phase one and use a variable frequency drive. Just controlling the voltage doesn't work that well with an induction motor.

The usual method of changing the drilling speed on pillar drills of this vintage is by altering the diameter of the drive pulleys, which are often stacked one above the other on the spindle.

I'd second PM here.

If you can't machine some, maybe look on Ebay.

It depends on the type of motor, if it has a separate start winding then you can't easily control the speed. You can usually hear the click of the starting switch closing again as the motor coasts down after you switch it off.

I got a cute little VFD and a 1/3HP 3 phase motor I intend to mount on my little drill press to get rid of the annoying stepped pulley system. A vintage machine like that I would be tempted to just leave it as is, unless you can find a vintage 3 phase motor.

Alright, I will look around, otherwise i'll just leave it as is, I believe everything's original except the power cord which I replaced yesterday :) It runs well though

EDIT: i'm looking to sell it if someone wants to make an offer haha

My drill press is just like PM described. If you want me to send a picture of the variable pulley discs let me know.

The real gold strike would be if you found a scrapped threadmill, they have all the parts you need for such a project. Their motors are somewhat powerful too.

ah if you meant treadmill, then yes, i have some parts, including the motor. Although i am not sure the motor works as well as it should, it seemed to not be going as fast as it should when I took it apart, like it's worn out.
