Grahame Marsh has done a somewhat neater one using trigger tubes - see The XC-18 he uses was available in bulk a few years ago for very little - a few cents each, so buying a couple of hundred was not a problem. I asked him a while back and he quoted me $3 each which I balked at. His original price of I think 10 for $5 was quite reasonable but I'm not gonna spend $300 to replace a $1 microcontroller even if it is a bit more novel.
