Hey guys,

I am building a geigercounter at the moment, it's based on the second schematic on this site:

Here is my Version on eagle:

The problem is that the boost-converter part just doesn't do anything. It doesn't draw any current and i get no Voltage at the output.

Has any one an idea where the problem could be?
By the way: I replaced the 2n4403 with a mpsa56 and the mpsa18 by a bc550b.

Best regards,

Philipp

That might be the problem, have you checked the gain on the BC550B?

Often with these oscillator circuits subbing parts will result in a non working circuit or one which draws excess current.

Also, the transistor on the coil itself is rated for much higher voltages than a "jellybean" transistor.
Your substitution has a Vmax Vceo of 45V so at best you will get a fraction of the desired voltage.

Thank you for your answer.
I replaced the transistors because they were not available in the shop i ordered the rest.

So i guess i have to buy the original transistors from other online shops.

I will inform you wether it works or not when i got the new transistors.

Best regards,

Philipp

Here's an idea that will save you a lot of headache. Do you happen to have any CCFL inverters on hand? If you connect a voltage doubler to them and power them via an adjustable supply such as the lm317 you can get a variable voltage power source, excellent for a geiger tube. This one only draws 13mA so it runs off of a 9V battery just fine. Link2

Hey Grenadier.
Thats a very neat trick, thanks for sharing it!

I fixxed the problem, the reason was a wrong pinout in eagle of one transistor, so it at least wasn't my fault xD
Here are some pictures:

What voltage does it take to bring the tube to operational state?
Is it 400V?
Similar to a strobe light?

The zenerdiodes are 120V, so the ouput voltage of the boostconverter is 240V which gets doubled, so i have about 500V on the tube.

I see.
Zener diodes set a precise output voltage so the tube doesn't spark over?
