I have a project for a 811A VTTC, but it might take some time to gather all needed parts...

Then I just remembered I have an old Zetagi BV131 RF Amplifier (1x EL509) that contains everything I need to build my first VTTC smile

It's transformer delivers 300V (600v with voltage doubler).

Bv13110

I found this shematic on some .cz websites :

El509v10

I wonder why the grid leak resistor has such a high value (compared to the 5k in Steve's 811A design)

For the tank capacitor I'll use a fixed one.

Do you have any suggestion / improvement on this schematic ?

(maybe connect secondary bottom to - rail instead of +, and connect them to mains ground ?)
(add a plate choke ?)

Thanks for your help smile

I don't like that schematic, specifically the fact that the secondary is 'grounded' to B+. Just use the same schematic Steve Ward used, except use a resistor for screen supply and use a lower plate voltage... Its all the same thing. Use mains ground for the secondary.

I used this schematic for a PL 509 VTTC I built for a friend. It makes 10cm sparks and will run continuously without the plate changing color, it was possible to tune it for 15cm sparks but I didn't check plate heating at this power.

Well, here is what I plan to do:

Myel5010

Arcstarter, let me know if you like it better this way...

I'll use the BV131 Power Supply, as it is

And for the VTTC part, I used a schematic found here Link2 and on many other .pl or .cz sites like Link2 Link2 (I had more luck with 6P45S than with EL509 )

I just made a few changes, like connecting secondary bottom to ground instead of +HV

The circuit is very close to Steve's one, differences are:

- grid leak cap and res are connected between g1 and feedback coil
- grid leak resistor has a high value of 1OOk-2W instead of 5k-50W in Steve's design
- we dont have a plate choke, maybe its not needed with this tube (I'm not sure bout that)

Woaw , sounds impressive !

Many thanks for the schematic, I'll try that one too... smile

Is the purpose of the IRF740 driver to turn the tube on for a short time every cycle ?

Thanks all for your kind help smile

PhilGood: Yes it is. It's unwise to operate a VTTC on a filtered supply without an interrupter, this way the input power is very high and streamers are not very long.
Ps. You can experiment with component values in the schematic, eg. the output voltage of the drive transformer as well as zener diode voltage affects on-time. Phasing of the drive transformer is important.
The output of the voltage multiplier peaks at 1600 volts at deadly currents so be very careful.

thanks for the additional infos smile and nice sparks for such a small tube !

Well I will first start with my design which is very simple, as this will be my very first TC !
I should be safe with the low voltage and the transformer...

Then later I'll try your design, and I'll probly have more questions on how to tune it ... btw does it requires a scope ? cause I don't have one atm ...

Yes it's a good idea to start at lower voltages and powers if this is your first TC.
And no, these circuits don't require a scope for basic tuning.

This looks great!

And that tube seems so small. I used the GI30 for mine, and got poor results as compared to this setup.
