I thought it would be best to start a new more relevant thread, I am not technically looking for a power supply, I am more so looking for a driver which I have found; I am using the SSTC 5 mini circuit created by Steve Ward. Here is the original thread for a reference---> Link2

I had a couple questions about the parts needed for the driver:

I was looking at the charts of different subs ( Link2 ) for different spark appearance, and was wondering what would be the best way to set something up where I could change out those values quick and easy?

The next thing I was looking at was the filter cap for the 120VAC, it says 420uf, I was thinking that it wouldn’t filter the rectified DC enough which could hurt the Mosfet’s or make unwanted noise in the arc.

The last thing is, I was looking at .68 uf caps and the only polypropylene caps I could find where cube ones not those rolled ones, is this going to effect it or make it not work at all.

I think what he meant by 5R is 5 ohms. Here is a quote for the site " I also reduced the value of the gate resistors... I'm tempted to say leave them out all together, but 5 ohms should be safe."

I was told 5R means 5 mega ohms but I think it means 5 ohms.

Any one have any idea?

Yes, 5R does in fact mean 5 ohms. For example (IIRC, it's quite late, sorry if this doesn't make sense)...

2k3 means 2.3 k ohms
4R7 means 4.7 ohms
etc.

These are the only ways I've ever seen resistance written. At first I had never seen the type you're confused about, and I too was confused.

Not a problem, do make sure that you post pictures when you get it working!

About the filtering...not filtering "enough" won't hurt anything, but it may cause the arcs to have a 60 or 120 Hz buzz (if you're in the US, otherwise it would be 50 or 100 Hz) depending if you use half or full wave rectification

I was going through some old TV boards and found all my electrolytic caps I need :) When I work on it I will keep the thread updated with pictures. I am going to mount everything on a nylon cutting board, there are a very good base.

Also, if you use an interrupter, and there is not enough filtering, the output will become unsteady (the output will be the interrupter frequency overlapped with the 100 or 120hz ripple). This shouldn't be a problem with Steve's mini, but it gave me trouble with a class E coil due to a feedback problem. If you keep the total power consumption fairly low using the interrupter, ~500uf would be enough. If you ran CW or high duty cycle, it would probably need over 1000uf.

I was looking at the schematic Link2 and I saw the two 10k pot's by the 555 timer. What do these do? Do they control the arc? If they do then what do the sub points do?

Those pots control the on and off time of the interrupter. One pot controls the amount of time the interrupter will have the coil running, while the other controls how long the interrupter is off. Sub-ing different resistors will allow different ranges of on/off times to be available.
