So I have two x-ray transformers that are just sitting in buckets of oil right now. Does anyone know of a good rugged, leakproof container I could use instead? I was thinking PVC pipe and sealing washers could be a good option, but after looking at the prices for 6" PVC and endcaps it would cost at least $30 to make a PVC enclosure. That's more than I bought the transformers for!

Just to give an idea of size, If the transformer was a cylinder it'd be 5 inches in diameter and 6 inches long.

Random idea. what about a small cooler, you would have and extra wall just in case the other one cracked.

So to summarise, you want a screw-topped or clip topped-plastic (pref PE or PP) ready-made container for little money that will accept a 5" diameter thing 6" tall.

A bucket with a clip-on lid (brewing, nappy/diaper soaking) is oops-spill resistant, but not leakproof. Cheap as chips and big enough.

Lapidiary (hobby stone polishing) uses screw-topped PP containers. You might find one large enough.

On holiday in France with my family a few years ago, we went on a "rapids canoeing" jaunt, where the main aim it seems was to get the tourists wet. We were hired screw-topped plastic containers of about the right size to put our valuables in to keep them dry. Divers and small speedboat / RHIB users have a call for the same sort of thing.

My local muscle-food shop has supplements in that sort of container, big enough? I've also seen that sort of box used for small mammal feed supplies.

I believe the chemical industry is one of the main consumers of heavy-duty screw top containers.

I used a sealed gray plastic outdoor electrical box I got from a hardware store. It's about a 7" cube.

Do you have a picture james?

I'll look for some enclosures tomorrow, a half gallon bucket might work but it's hard to find those...

I see two options available.

First, find a container to repurpose for your effort.
--advantage is little cost.
--but finding one for your specs is more difficult then ifyou had a made container.

Or second, Make a container from pipe, plastic sheet or whatever.
--advantage is that you get the size and shape you want, for your purpose.
--disadvantage is that your labour and materials cost is higher, vs a found container.

as for real examples:

i "found" a container a 5 Liter heineken mini draught keg for 33 USD, free beer or a free transformer case depending on how you look at it!

Another "made" example is my HV ferrite 3kW oil cooled setup, i have a post somewhere with a picture.

Anything small and sturdy will do at this point, I'm using a cut open milk jug ATM.

It took me two months to get all the NC'ing done with my classes and what not, but this case was made entirely by myself from scrap metal purchased as round pipe, and flat plate, and flat poly plate.

The black squarish thingy is a transmission radiator (21$ at Pick-n-Pull). I will pump oil through at 1 gpm, to dissipate heat. The pump will go upto 35 PSI, and Im using 3/8" ID hose for low resistriction, high flow.
