I'm not sure exactly what kind of wire it is, but I think it's Essex "amber", with a "modified polyester base coat" and a "modified amide/imide overcoat". Some magnet wire can be soldered without stripping the insulation off, but not this stuff, apparently.

A method used by radio repair shops is to put a blob of solder on an iron tip while dragging the end of of the wire through. Its important to do this in one quick action before flux in the solder boils off. This leaves a tinned end.
The other way is to wrap the insulated wire around a tinned coil terminal and apply iron and solder quickly.
In the best of worlds you would have a Bunsen flame at hand with your choice of flame color parts to pass the wire quickly through to get bare metal.
