Nicely done there! How many turns would you guestimate are on that beast?

Hmmm... 40 layers *~23 turns = 40 * ~920T.

I use autoCAD 2000, 2007 and Inventor,...... And yes they're illegal cracks.

Wow, that's the first time I've heard someone actually admit that in a public forum!!! suprised

Didn't we all do that as kids? Well those of us who grew up in the PC era anyway. I have fond memories of dialing into BBS's at a blazing 2400bps in search of "warez" back before I had the means to buy the stuff even if I had wanted.

These days I use almost entirely free / open source applications and can afford to buy what little commercial software I need, but I would imagine few things have changed other than the amount of bandwidth we have access to.

Blender might get good enough for CAD work sooner then later :)
I'm also an open source fan, that's all I use for the most part.

I've been fairly impressed with Google Sketchup and Inkscape. Neither is a CAD program exactly, but good for drawing and modeling things. Usually I find it easier to sketch something up on paper than to model it on a computer, unless I'm going to produce it on a CNC machine.

I've played around with Blender for a while. It's a wonderul tool for creating 3D animations, but I can't see how it could ever be used for CAD.

I'm an open source fan too because it's FREE!!! tongue

I'm all for these expensive packages being made available cheaper (or free) on the basis that it encourages innovation.
Making all the 3-D CAD stuff overly expensive keeps it away from people who might actually make something useful with it.

As long as you don't tell us where to get it, I guess it's OK smile

High-end 3D packages like SolidWorks have a price tag over $10k. But pirate copies are easily available (obviously I won't say where)

I wouldn't be surprised if the industry turned somewhat of a blind eye to amateur use of them: after all it keeps the students, who might become pros later, away from open source alternatives. smile

But if you tried using one for commercial work you would get royally screwed.

As for open source, I know of one company who uses KiCad for commercial PCB design.
