The disk shape reduces capacitance and thus reduces ringing on the secondary side. Plus capacitance can introduce other problems such as arcing between layers.

It also reduces the voltage difference between layers. Right now my transformer has a maximum of 250V between layers, which isn't much at all.

I'll look into getting a plastic or wood clamp made. I want it to look nice, so looks like I'll have to fire up autodesk...

I just held the core up against a scrap of polycarbonate and traced around it with a fine tip Sharpie marker. Cut that out with scissors and cleaned up the edges with sandpaper. Only took a few minutes and came out fine.

That's all well and good, but I'd like it to stand up like it does now. Trying to figure out how to accomplish that.

How'd you get copy of autodesk?
I searched for hours and couldn't find it for less than a LOT of money.

So I did away with the clamp entirely and opted for two paper tubes, which when wrapped up with electrical tape exert enough friction on the core to keep it held together.

I made a new primary, still 4+4 turns but this time I used 2 strands of 18ga wire instead of litz. I think it looks much cooler.

[piccy of new transformer]

So I proceeded to hook it up to 48V and GAHHhnxdbbdursxhneuHolyShit!!! Just watch this video...

@magnet18, here's a hint; it starts with a tor and ends with a rent.

Nicely done there! How many turns would you guestimate are on that beast?

I use autoCAD 2000, 2007 and Inventor, despite everyone else on the planet insisting Solid Works is a gift from Jesus himself. And yes they're illegal cracks.
