Hi All!

this is the setup we made for the public demonstration of the protective effect of a faraday cage on the italian TV show "fenomenal" (the same of the last year), the cage was entirely made in welded stainless steel and a randomly select VIP guest was used as a cavy inside it! wink

For copyright reasons i cannot give you the original videoclip of the show but i can link one videoclip of the backstages

The experiment was aired on "italia1" on 22 march 2010

This is an interesting effect that I have seen multiple times. I would like to know more about it my self, but it seem like the cage by its self just sitting on the ground in enough to make the spark want to take the cage to ground rather than going inside and hitting stuff.

we tried the effect with both grounded and ungrounded cage, the sparks appearance was almost the same so we decided for an ungrounded cage to add a cool effect.

After some tries we also added some breakpoints welded under the cage for spread the sparks in front of the cage, everything sitting on a wet floor for both electrical and aesthetical purposes (the sparks are brighter if the floor is more conductive and also the sparks -not only underside the cage but also under the spark gap and the toroid- are reflected by the shiny floor).

Ciao!
Fabio.

this was only a preliminary test of the show with an improvised host and an improvised cavy for testing the effect only; the floor was wetted only under the cage and coils but during the real recording the floor was entirely wetted.

if you look closer in almost every film where an explosion or a similar special effect is present, the floor is always wetted and shining for emphasizing the effect! wink

Ciao!
Fabio.
