How critical is the material used for the primary former? Will black foamcore ABS work ok? I know that it's a poor choice for the secondary, but it's about all the local hardware stores have in large enough sizes for a primary. I have some 2" acrylic tube that ought to make a nice secondary for a small coil.

I once asked a similar question in that I had read that some black polymers had carbon or some other conductive & that would have an effect on the coil. I was told by many folks that it simply didn't have enough (carbon, etc) to do a great deal of harm. I used the black polymer and all was well. I had only read about that issue in one web-page and unfortunately cannot find it's origin today - I wish I could so that you might read that and see if it's similar to your query.
Opinion is that so long as the distance is consistent between each it should not present a problem. You could check via testing the foam itself for any conductivity with a DIMM; if it's totally non-conductive....there you go.

A DMM has only a limited range. I've encountered many things that would conduct HV well enough to arc that still registered nothing on a good DMM.
That said, it's a pretty small investment to try winding a primary on some black ABS and give it a try. That's the standard stuff used for DWV plumbing around here so it's what the hardware stores stock. It's hard to find PVC larger than 2". I'll try it and see what happens.
