so a green laser works by boubling the IR light's frequeny to green visible light right?
does it only double IR frequencies? has anyone tried to alligning 2 crystals together in series to quadrible IR frequencies?

The doubling crystal is most likely ND:YVO4, ths only work at around 808nm, what your saying wont work.

Take a look at his, read it well. Link2

Even if it did work, that would turn it into UV-C, which poses a cancer hazard, as it's ionizing.

so if it works, then we would have a death ray that cause cancers if exposed to the beam long enough?

It seems you are interested in lasers, when you little about them, I have been toying with them for a while, sign up to this forum.

You will get all the info you need.

And if your looking to build a 'burning laser', learn more about them first and buy safety goggles according to the wavelength.

Im pretty sure the doubling crystal in most greens is KTP. the ND:YVO4 or ND:YAG is just used to achive 1064nm from 808nm, before doubling to 532nm.

The 808nm pump diode excites the ND:YVO4/YAG, which lases @ 1064nm (deeper IR), and its fed into a KTP portion for frequency doubling into 532nm (green).

Most common crystal sets though are ND:YVO4/KTP, without the KTP element, all you will get is 1064nm out.

KTP is fairly tollerant to a wavelenth shift by a few nm on its pump, but when you get into other DPSS systems like a 473nm, you will find that LBO crystals are even a bigger pain in the ass to work with, as they require even more strict temperture regulations for best efficiency, and may not even lase if the input is 2nm off.

Long story short, these crystals where designed for a specific input and output, anything else will typically not work.

Quadrupling does work; the second stage is often LBO.
Don't even think about doing it at home; serious green is hard enough.
