Just thinking, it could be used for a machine gun type of coil, perhaps. If you could use a fast refreshing volt-meter you could easily tell when the cap is about to fire. Or, you could use a normal switch on the outside of the circuit where the mains come in, and it would prevent having to use an external gate switch for the SCR.
If the circuit built into the package isn't enough, you could rebuild the same circuit and use it for higher power purposes. Changing the zener diode changes when the SCR fires, allowing for a pretty big degree of control.

I think it could work, but personally I'd go a more controlled route. With that scr, it will just go off when the voltage gets to the right point. That means you will never really know when it's gonna go off or the frequency on the shots. I'd rather monitor the voltage and manually trigger an scr when the time came.

And if you needed more power you could probably remake the circuit within the package...or parallel them too.
Actually, thinking about it more it could be used as a sine wave oscillator circuit, or a spark gap substitution...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. If you rebuillt the circuit within the package you could use any value zener diode, and thus able to create an adjustable "spark gap" so to speak. Very interesting.

Wouldn't that be considerably better than a simple spark gap since there would not be that (usually) unwanted air resistance for a spark gap otherwise?
Also there wouldn't be the sparking which would produce ozone and all sorts of EMI, which would be better unless you wanted all of those things of course
Finally, this would work at lower voltages (high current since this uses an SCR) which you wouldn't otherwise be able to use a spark-gap type device for.

These devices are pretty similar to SIDACs. There have been lots of ignition coil drivers, and even Tesla coil drivers, built with SIDACs, either singles or series strings.
In particular there was an interesting hybrid IGBT/SIDAC stack called the SISG, and developments with names like BRISG, T-BRISG and so on. These drove Tesla coils making sparks up to several feet. Search the forum for details.
I consider all of them just minor variations on Terry Fritz's OLTC, an almost 10 year old concept which I experimented with up to 4kW and 2 meter long spark.

I don't know. It'd be interesting to see a circuit based off of this. I'll probably get around to it eventually once I have some free time or get bored enough to try it.
