glue sticks mkay not get soft with heat but dry out even more. i doubt that it would affect it. why not try a small area of the paper first. i am dying to know how it turns out.
I use plain and simple transparencies - cheap, designed to go into laser printers (with the back of stickers there is a chance for the toner to be left in the printer when it goes trough the "pizza wheels" - been there done that .... )
After heating it just wait for a couple of minutes to get to room temperature (the colder it is the easier is to remove the transparency - it comes right of - no water no nothing).
here is the homemade laminator and some boards that I've made with the method.

Really? Ive never had a problem? Did you make that device Dr. H yourself?
I have tested the glossy paper from stickers on 3 or 4 different laser printers and most of the time bits of the toner (lets say traces) just came off in the printer and had to clean it after that.
About the device - yep I made it myself -one day I woke up with the idea to build something like that (laminators cost about 50$ here so I didn't feel like spending the bucks). If you look closely you will see that I literally used whatever I had on hand - motor from a MO, the rollers are from a copy machine, the heating element is from a grill ... and after 4 hours of work this came to life .... I have been using it for more than 3 years now - will never go back to "ironing".
I just print over the transparency and transfer it to the board with the hot rollers (the way you are using a magazine or the back of stickers) . The board I've posted is made by using a transparency.

Do you use coated or uncoated transparencies? I cant get the toner to relase from the sheet.
