schottky diodes on gate driver outputs for drsstc use

Hello,

Could someone explain for good the real purpose of these diodes and when they should/shouldn't be used? I mostly believed they are to be used with bipolar gate drivers only. But are they really needed with mosfet based drivers like ixdd414's or UCC's, or really just get wasted there?

The clamping diodes? If those are what you are talking about then they are a good idea, even though a lot of drivers have internal ones. During transitions spikes will develop from the stray inductance, and the drivers aren't supposed to sink current in their high state/source current in their low state.

Some gate driver chips specify a maximum reverse current for the outputs to avoid latchup. The MOSFET ones can latch just like CMOS logic ICs do. They have parasitic diodes, but these go to the substrate, which isn't necessarily connected to the source like it is in a discrete FET. So the magnetising current ends up flowing through random parts of the chip.

The popular "UCCs" use both BJTs and FETs in their output stages, and can latch up.
