LC meter testing

I got my LC meter today!
(after like a month mistrust)

Overall it's a really well built circuit board. So ratty edges, well done solder joints but with a little bit of flux here and there (hand soldered). The LCD is nice and bright and it's a standard 16 pin one, so you can replace it with any color you choose (connected via headers).

Find out the waveform and Vrms and freq used for you pF and mF measurements, thell be different and theyll matter.

Same goes for your uH and H mesurements the inductance measurements are always more iffy then the cap ones.

With the kind of HV and SMPS's you and i make, these details can become decisive in figuring out why something does or doesnt work.

These are great meters, way better than calculating and dimension math crap. so long as you know thier limitations, and do not expect better than what they are credible for. ( X.X pF is credible, X.XX is not )

Some of the internet purchased ones have sig figs that are not justified, thier just meaningless conversion remenants.

Measuring C gives a nice clean sine wave.

Measuring L gives a dirty wave, but it's still a sine.

All the measurements are on the DSO's screen. The frequency depends on the thing being measured; smaller values give a higher frequency.

I wish I had something to compare this to. I think the significant digits are in fact significant and not just random numbers. I say this because I made an air core inductor and slowly introduced some iron into it, and the digits climbed just as they should have.

Good stuff! That looks like a handy instrument to have around. I'm impressed that it manages to measure such a wide range.

You could check your inductors by hooking them up to some known capacitors, and using a signal generator (if you have one around) to find the resonant frequency. Then from that you can calculate the inductance.

It wouldn't surprise me if the 12H one was really 12.49H. But when measuring iron-cored coils, remember the inductance you see depends on the frequency and voltage you use to measure it, so you can get any answer you want.

How much did it cost you? Looks like it has a good measuring range at any rate! For the last few years now I've been using an LCF meter I made myself, and it hasn't disappointed yet. Link2 Does yours go up to 30000µF too? tongue
