I am currently trying to build a Plasma Speaker(Singing Arc) based on scopeboy's schematic (link at the bottom of the post) and I am having a small problem.
Just today I managed to fully assemble the components but there is no arc. My flyback transformer is creating some 10-20Hz sound (I have no idea how; my initial guess was that the primary was arcing on to the secondary.) that hasn't got neither a regular amplitude, nor a regular frequency. When I vary the 10k potentiometer this transformer sound changes in frequency, inversely proportionally to the potentiometer reading. The 22k potentiometer has had no effect whatsoever on the sound inside the transformer. In addition I measured only a mere 3V AC on the flyback transformer's primary which to me seems abnormal.
In addition, the two diodes that are indicated to be on heatsinks on the schematic, are on heatsinks but are generating no heat whatsoever. Moreover I placed all the four MOSFETs (I am using the IRFP40 Power MOSFETS, rated 200V, 20A) on heatsinks also, but they aren't generating any heat either. I added an LM7812 12V regulator at the beginning of the circuit in order to step down from my 30V power source, and that is generating a load of heat, fact that seems conterintuitive to me as the ICs aren't consuming >1A of current and aren't gettng warm.
If you could help me get the plasma speaker 'speaking', I would forever be in your debt.
