i bought two of these

SCR & Diode
1000v @ 16 amp

(SDI) M25/16-1K
That's right, two components. Completely isolated: an SCR and a HV Diode, BOTH rated at 1kv, 16 amps..... in one package!!

Made by Silicon Power Cube. Package handles 400 amp surge, 2500v insulation. Cost effective if only using diode or SCR, and if you can use both, WOW, what a saving. 5 spade lugs. Heatsink base. Hook up diagram available.

here is the web site there all the way at the bottom left

Link2

i was testing them on my 85j coil gun and wired them according to this Link2 I used a 9v with a 4.7k resistor but when i pressed the trigger switch nothing happened so i used a 5v wall adapter (dc) the coil shot... i tried to recharge the caps but there was a short somewhere, so i removed a lead that i had on the scr the voltage began to rise again this happened with both did i fry them ?

Sounds like you fried it. If you hooked it exactly as in the link you posted then you didn't use the diode. He says right next to the picture that he didn't use the diode. Firing your coil without the protection diode would kill the SCR and most likely fail shorted.

thanks,

do you know of any good scrs that can handle 350j at 450v that wont break my bank :) will the diode that comes with the scr be ok to use for the "protection diode" for the coil ? can it handle the back current.

It all depends on the current going through the coil. You can get some cheap SCR's on allied electronics and parallel 3 or 4 of them together. To figure out the current handling, add the peaks and multiply by .8.

SK065K is what i used, they where 3 bucks each on ebay and 5 of them is what i use for my 800v 624j capacitor bank. I short circuited the caps through the SCRs in parallel and they where fine with a D cell for gate voltage. They are 1kv and ~1Ka peak for one cycle of 60Hz sine wave. Pulses in a bank of electrolytics is a shorter pulse so they will survive with more current than 1Ka.

I looked on ebay for the SK065K SCRs and couldn't find them. Do you have a link for them or are they sold out? thanks

does anyone know if the built in diode can handle the power to be used for a protection diode.

I am familiar w/ those diode/scr units and they really mean 1Kv max... I don't know if I'd use them as a protection diode. They were made for a 480v commercial feed. Those units are designed for a commercial heating / air conditioning unit. The "diagram" that is often included is hand drawn and incorrect. Lug 1 & 2 or 4 & 5 are reversed I believe. They should be tested before use to make sure. There are a great many of those are around and they have differing schematics.
