Hmm.. sounds like very shortly we could get to test this particular theory for real if the latest sunspot group erupts. I had a look just now on Spaceweather and the configuration is very similar to the initial form just before the white light flare of 1859 erupted. i.e. a semicircle of sunspots with a connected magnetic field which leads to a beta-gamma-delta complex that twists back on itself and creates a gigantic magnetic knot that then explosively decays.
Interestingly enough there is a theory (aka Heim-Droscher) which hypothesises a neutral electron with similar mass to an electron but substantially different properties. As it transits the nucleus of an unstable atom some of the particle's kinetic energy could cause the nucleus to ring like a bell and resulting in either an increase or decrease in probability of decay depending on the nuclear configuration.
This would also get around the problem of neutrinos not interacting enough with anything to yield any effect whatsoever.

Comments?
Would this fit with the night time observations of the decay effect? Seems that an electron massed parrticle could not travel through the earth to create such an effect. It could also be easily detectable.

Well, neutrinos are produced by radioactive decay. Could a radioactive decay process be reversed by adding a neutrino of the right type at the right time? Feynman diagrams posit reversibility in time, so maybe it is possible.
Still, the data need to be looked at very closely for spurious effects. "
Interesting idea, could it be that there is a "sensitive" point just at the right time during the decay process where the neutrino flux has a detectable effect?

While the shape of the current bunch of sunspots may be similar, the scale isn't even close. Also, the group of sunspots consisted of something like 3 times as many individual spots. The sun was also in a profoundly more active period at the time.
I think the chances of seeing a Carrington level event in such a quiet solar cycle are incredibly low.

Interesting. That said, it doesen't preclude the possibility of something similar in say 2013 (assuming the current predictions of increasing solar activity hold)
