What causes the electrical ring around some tesla coils?

I've seen pictures of lots of Tesla coils and in some there is a ring of electricity surrounding the coil. It's usually a bit out from the coil (10-20 feet) and has a bunch of strands of electrical energy coming from it. PS. There is a good example of this in my profile pic, if you can make it out.

Thats most commonly known as coronal discharge, which is a partial discharge, as it appears to just create a fuzz and not form an actual arc (but given enough time to ionize more air, which is lower resistance it could well arc over pending the distance of its termination point and the potential of the source itself).
This is formed by the ionization of the ambient air via high voltage.
if that more or less makes sence.

Your profile pic is a time lapse photograph. Let me guess, you've seen a lot of these pics on Tesla Down Under? He takes a time laps photo of a wire spinning around the coil that is connected to the topload. The wire has a single arc coming out from it. It is not an actual electronic phenomenon that you can see in real time. If you read the stuff on making the pics on Tesla Down Under it will explain it more.

In this photo you can clearly see the long wire. It's attached to a motor that is on top of the Tesla coil and spins around. With time-lapse photography, it looks like the photo in Ash Small's previous post.

The correct term is long exposure, not time lapse.
The photo is exposed while the spark is rotated by a full 360 degrees over the length of the exposure, thus producing a photo of a 360 degree spark.

Oh, I see how it's done. I thought it was just a power thing and when you made a powerful enough coil that ring would appear. Oh well, *goes to disassemble 500 gigavolt Tesla coil*. I had an idea though, using a Tesla turbine to spin a wire fast enough that due to POV the ring would appear. You'd have to spin the wire REALLY fast, but turbines can get over 15k RPM.

Apologies. You are correct, Avi. My mistake.
