Some way to "take out" the hv diode in a flyback?

Is there any safe or easy way of shorting out or taking out the HV diode from an epoxied DC flyback transformer? I'd like it to be pure AC, but don't have a way of getting an AC flyback. I've seen some people with shorted diodes but from the way it sounds, if the diode goes, so does the flyback. Any suggestions?

You can connect a big capacitor to it and blow the diode, but the coils don't seem to last long afterwards, you can take a grinder to it and short out the diode by soldering, but, again, the coils don't seem to last long, or....wind your own secondary.

Some flybacks have multiple diodes spread out between sections of windings. AC flybacks are not hard to come by though, they're on ebay frequently. As Ash suggested, you can also wind your own secondary on a salvaged core. It's not as hard as it sounds.

They fail so quickly because the diode(s) split the voltage from several seriesed' coils, which reduces the insulation requirements. If you get rid of the diodes the V eats the wire enamel and you have a failure mode of one kind or another.

My advice, buy an old but known good AC flyback, or wind your own, you'll be happier.

you'll get ALOT more current if you coil your own secondary. and its AC too :D u can use it for a voltage multiplier, plasma globe and lots of fun stuff
but its quite hard to get the voltage as high as a normal flyback though.
