Hi bwang I used standard 1n4007's with doorknob for my dubbler hear is the thread that I used them on. uf4007 would be a better choice if you can get them cheaply

There are at least 5-6 manufactures of HV diodes, but it can be hard to find distributors. A few of them will sell parts directly if you contact them. As far as cheap diodes, the selection is limited but OT Electronics has the best prices I've found. They have all sorts of caps too.

I think OT electronics is the web site of the guy (from China) who sells the same stuff on ebay. I think it's the same stuff as sold by HVCA, but I could be wrong.

I know there used to be other manufacturers of HV diodes (i.e., over 1 kv, fast recovery types), but when I search nowadays, I see no evidence of any other manufacturers. (There's a company called Semtech that might be manufacturing them but I'm not sure if they still do).

Can you tell me, who are some of these other manufacturers?

Check out this Link2 company. They also have an interesting tutorial about how hv diodes are designed and manufactured on their website!

It is the same stuff as on ebay, but it's a bit cheaper to buy directly than to buy on ebay since he doesn't have to pay the ebay fees.

I found several companies when I was searching a while back. VMI is one of them which someone else has mentioned, I wish I could recall the others.

I've bought from OT Electronics on ebay over several years, and found them honest and reliable.

I have also bought from OT and agree 100%. Their same products are marked up by others however and I would much rather deal with them for more than simple monetary reasons. They are uniquely honest.

Well I checked out VMI's prices on a few diodes, and they're simply outrageous...breathtaking, even.

It looks to me like there are basically only two options for anyone with a finite amount of cash: (1) string together tens-to-hundreds of 1 kv diodes; or (2) buy something from OT Electronics.

One benefit of stringing together bunches of 1 KV diodes, is that you apparently end up with a very electrically-rugged CW multiplier that needs no series resistors for protection. (Or at least, that's the impression I got from looking at the video that Uzzors put up on youtube, wherein he draws some nice hot arcs from his resistor-less multiplier, with no problems at all).

Unfortunately though, I don't have the patience to solder hundreds of diodes togethet.

Although I have some 2CL2FM diodes, being that I cannot find any inexpensive, electrically and physically suitable epoxy and/or RTV for encapsulation, I'm not going to use them. Instead, I think I'm going to get some 10KV, 1A diodes from OT Electronics.

OT's 10KV 1A diodes are physically big enough that they should be able to operate at full voltage in the open air. Moreover, the relatively large physical size of these diodes may facilitate the use of some kind of improvised heatsinks for better cooling.

Hopefully, these diodes, with their 1A rating, will be electrically rugged enough that they will need only some small series resistors for protection (if they need any at all).

Yeah, I was similarly wondering the same thing.

Something like those, look great and are a pretty decent price. The only downfall is paypal, which stinks. If you string enough of those diodes together you could make a pretty nice multiplier. Now all I need are caps....

*goes off murmuring about money*

I see another potential candidate diode for use in a multiplier: a Vishay RGP02-20E.

These are 2 kv diodes but they're a little slower (300 nS) and a little less rugged (Max Avg If = 0.5A, Ifsm = 20A) than a UF4007.

I see them priced from 0.10 to 0.17 each or so depending on quantity.
