I was at a party this weekend where my friends showed me this new party trick, in which they stick a bottle in the corner of a wall by pushing it hard into the corner then jerking it up as so
However, we then decided to try doing it on a flat wall for some reason, which to our amazement somehow worked! onetwo
All we do is push them into the wall then jerk them upwards, i cannot think of how they are sticking, other than perhaps we are instantly melting a thin layer of paint which then acts as glue?

Blimey! When I was at school we had proper blackboards and rubbers for them - you could stick a bb rubber to the wall the same way - press it against the wall, then slide it a little bit up... (nothing is really new).
What happened was that the paint abrades into the surface of the object being pushed against it and as you surmised, acts as a glue.
Be aware that it does damage the paintwork! (even if only a bit)
