Well. I was testing my CW capacitor charger. I made it so it can be isolated from the capacitor bank. When i discharge it, my CW charger doesnt explode like last time. I have a switch to change charge mode on and off. When you isolate it, Charge mode is off. It then has a 1K resistor to drain the CW capacitors to 0V. If the bank has 400V, and you reconnect the CW, 2V is lost in the system, and the CW has 400V back in it. The switch doesnt spark at all.
Issue 1: When i isolated the CW, and pushed drain, i heard a sssss sound and my meter wouldn't show 400V, it was showing 700, flickering, etc. Now. I remember when I do 1K resistor to the system in the past by hand, it drew a 1CM arc. My only conclusion for the hissing sound, was a possible arc forming in the switch. At 350V, it didnt do this, and the meter was fine. its only 400-450V.
Issue 2: I have the solution already im sure. I had my meter on the system. The meter is ALWAYS connected to the capacitor bank, which has an antiparallel stud diode. I put a ring launcher on it and my SCR. The SCR i connected the trigger gate, 5V, to the volt meters 5V power supply. I did 50V, fired the disk, cool. I did 100V, it killed my meter.
My conclusion for Issue 2. By connecting the SCR to the 5V of the meter, it is no longer a floating system. By triggering the SCR, i made the ground of the 5V, share with the capacitor bank, thus causing the meter to die. My only other thought, the std diode didnt catch the anti-parallel fast enough, and spiked the system dead.
Any ideas on why the meter could have died due to a discharge to a ring launcher, please let me know. I'm buying a new one, but I want to know the issue is fixed. Here's the current layout:
