I'm not totally sure of this but I think if the gentleman used a cleaner cut such as a plasma cutter he would get rid of his side illuminations.
If you were to construct the same item with a CD I think you would still want as clean of a cut as possible but I think it would be much less challenging to make your color elements clean. I may just try this with something very simple like a multi-color LED(s) or UV as I have a plasma torch I could use. How fast do DVD/CD drives spin generally?

At 8x a CD-ROM will spin from 1600 to 4000 rpm, depending on wether it is reading information from the centre or the outer rim. According to Wikipedia.
