The main attraction of SiC is its large band gap - 3.65eV - which makes spectral X-ray detection at room temperature possible. SiC detectors are all the rage at the moment - as diamond films were a few years ago - so it'll be fun to see if I can tweak some sort of response out of it on a budget of £10/€12.
SiC UV photodiodes are already commercially available:

sound like fun,I know it's possible to get SIC on good quality send paper,I imagine the Cristal structure is important,on the other hand the Schottky contact make it easy ,no need for special dopant .
