Stage lighting people use plastic mesh as a semi-transparent screen. I had some fun with it in the past with a laser sound to light device I built. Watch out: old stuff can be dangerously flammable, apparently.

You can also get some surprisingly impressive 3D effects by shining a rapidly moving laser through a loosely scrunched up ball of the stuff. If you hang it right in a darkened room you can't see the mesh, only the image it scatters.

Does it have to be wire? If not you could use landscape frabric. The kind used to keep weeds down.If it has to be wire,you can get metal screening at the local hardware store,only about 4-5 foot widths,but as long as you want it.
