Wall transformer driver

Please tell me you did not just spark the outputs.

Being a voltage multiplier, it needs a limiting resistor in order to avoid blowing the diodes when arcing. By far the most helpful to your multiplier is to increase the frequency. Which diode did you use, by the way?

Ignition coils are cheap if you get one from a salvage yard. The local Pull A Part around here charges $2.50 for them but you have to go pull them out yourself. For best performance using an iron core (wall) transformer you should drive the original secondary push-pull (if center tapped) or with a full bridge otherwise you will have problems with core saturation.

I prefer to wind my own transformers on salvaged ferrite cores and drive them at high frequency. Much more efficient, careful though, you can get a nasty shock or set something on fire. Been there, done that.

This guy Link2 ran a 240v - 9v xfrm backwards and said he got 10kV out of it.

This is due to rate of change of current through the transformer, saturation is still a concern though, power is limited.

In fact, you won't get a big output at all from the transformer because it uses an iron-laminated core, instead of a powdered ferrite core meant for high frequencies. You could try to get the powdered ferrite core from a computer power supply transformer, which has a powdered ferrite core. Then rewind it with a lot of thin wire as the HV output, using proper isolation in the process.
