So today I piked up an old philco TV. It looked pretty cool even though it was beat up pretty bad. Naturally I thought AC flyback.

So just for S&Gs I decided to plug it in, and it took an unusually long time to show a picture. It eventually did, but the vertical sweep is broken.

Tore the back off...

Yeah I'd say it's old, certainly explains the warmup time. I thought about restoring it but I wouldn't even know where to begin. If I could find the issue I could fix that and make the plastic nice and new again. Although a knob is missing on the front.

So it's up to you 4HV, tear it up or is it worthy of an attempt to fix it?

I say it depends on how much space you have left for antiques in your house smile

Oh my god that thing is amazing. Must cost like $5000. If I get rich it's definitely going in my front room.

A peek inside the HV cabinet. If you follow the red wires you'll see the tube's heater is powered from a single turn on the core. Clever.

The tuner is pure genius. It's basically a different inductor for each channel, and they rotate to select a channel.

Made in america.

I have to agree. I too have come across old tuners and they are quite clever in the configurations for channel select.

Good score, a valve tv! Definately dimantle it and salvage the tubes
and transformers. That will be a rectifier tube after the flyback.
It wouldn't be much point fixing it, most stations are going digital now anyway.

The screen shot shows is mostly good. Get the schematic
and fix the vertical sweep. Ultra- not complicated.

If you fix it and it looks good there may be a market for it
in collectables. Its got to be clean. Check out the Philco group
in ARF, Television forum.

You might turn a good dollar on that thing or even trade
it for some good stuff. Thats a 60's vintage beast. The little box
you peeked into is called the doghouse.

I looked earlier and couldn't find a schematic. It's Philco R-1228-PGY if you want to take a look yourself.

I'm not sure if it's worth anything though. The case is kinda banged up and it's missing a knob...

"Turret" tuners were pretty much normal for the older VHF (50MHz) 405 line and dual standard TVs in the UK before everything went UHF in 84.
They can be the biggest source of annoyance with TV restoration as the faults on them are nearly always intermittent.
Some even had valves (tubes) mounted in them and they would shake loose or the HT contacts would come adrift.
Good luck with the restoration... :o) I've done a few... A labour of love for sure.
Cheers.
Mark.
