I'm now a freshman major in EE but currently didn't know much about EE.I'm now trying to build TCs.I once successfully build a miniSSTC under someone's instruction several years ago(at that age I even don't know the diffrence between BJT and MOSFET).

of course now I know a little bit more about EE.

I successfully build steve's microSSTC (the flyback one).several days ago.But when I tried build the miniSSTC again I had a lot of problem.I almost blow up something.

My schoolmates keep on saying that why you build these weird, useless thing while you are not familiar with SMPS.(I tell them I'm building a special"self resonanting air cored step up SMPS")

thanks

I have told you about 5+ times showing you how to build a simple low power flyback SGTC, but you dont listen.

That's not what he's asking for, so I have no idea why you expect him to listen to you.

I reckon understand the basic theory of SSTC is required, and try to build TCs without modify the sch, you may get some result.

Have you considered EasternVoltage's KIT? It's inexpensive & you would learn quite a bit. All parts could be obtained in one shot as well as the circuit board; you simply solider it up! In this case it's not LOPT oriented (using a "flyback") however from a learning perspective as well as having all the need parts for an effective SSTC, it's small yet large enough to have good output.

If however there is some reason why a "flyback" model is important to your learning endeavors, the kit may serve as a "leg up" to understanding where and how to present the PS.

Nothing you build is "useless" if it provides a learning method for you. I wish I was in school once more: I wish you good luck> I am envious. smile

I now decide to build SSTC.Because in the place I live the sound produced by SGTC spark gap may disturb other.

SSTC or SGTC they are both going to be loud unless you build a small one, for example is here is my 101.6mm X 506mm SSTC, and me adjusting the interrupter frequency.

That's not entirely true, you can easily make a sstc that is very quiet. As long as you have fairly high on time and low freq, it will be quite quiet. For example, a halfwave rectified sstc will sound just like a vttc that is halfwave rectified.

For your first sstc, i would definately suggest a class E, even though getting them tuned right is much harder than a halfbridge or fullbridge. You do not have to tune it perfectly, though it will be inefficient.

You can omit the 555 and let pin 3 on the mosfet driver fly if you are using halfwave rectification for the mosfet supply. I used a schematic much like that: Link2 It uses only one mosfet, but is much more efficient than any halfbridge coil i have made.

You are right arcstarter, but I was looking at it from a stand point of being able to adjust how the arc looks, and a lot of people are always trying to make bigger arcs, but once you start making bigger arcs the decible level of the arcs also increases, the other option is to use a high resonant frequency, which still would mean a small coil.
