I'm still reading this:

Link2

but it seems to have some interesting ideas on Zero Voltage Switching.

I think the basic concept is to switch on a second transistor to eliminate losses in the first transistor during switch-off, but I'm still reading it.(it gets a bit more complicated later on.)

Yup it keeps the current flowing through the center tap & inductor which also reduces noise on the line

The number of topologies out there has become nearly unimaginable ... there are also zero voltage zero current switching topologies (actually only near zero, but they call them zero switching any way).

What it in practice boils down to "What do the commercial ICs support? Lets use that" :)

I'm interested in reading up on this if you know anywhere with such info off the top of your head.

I think SLR is ZVS ZCS. Start off by reading Steve Ward's page, I found it quite useful.

If you are referring to the high power ferrite transformer, I've read it many times over and I do not see how it would achieve ZVS...

I'm sure it was his page that had a detailed desciption of a ZVS ZCS H-bridge and the waveforms. It had what I can only describe as a 'double sine wave', two positive cycles, then two negative cycles. I only read it once, I was going to re-read it following our discussion on HVCHAT earlier.

You're referring to his SLR CCPS designs, which make use of ZCS, but not ZVS as far as I can tell. I'm actually not familiar with any topology that can do both, though there might be some type of class DE that comes close...

My mistake. I've read a number of articles recently which claim to be ZVS ZCS, most go over my head, I don't know if that is because they are incorrect, or if it is because they are too technical. (I don't yet have the knowledge to distinguish)

From what I'd read, I'd come to the conclusion that SLR was both. (or, at least, claimed to be)

I'm currently following two avenues of research, one, that, given the correct PWM, flyback topology could be as efficient as other topologies, and two, that any excess heating of transistors is inefficient.

As Pinky pointed out earlier, the commercial ICs available seem to dictate current practice.

I'm trying to avoid ICs if possible, but I'm also interested in ZVS ZCS topologies.(I've some ideas regarding using astable multivibrators to drive multiple monostables (or bistables, I need to look this up again), which, in turn, drive multiple transistors, as in the above article, to reduce switching losses)
